What is Montessori?

Why do we do, what we do?

The Montessori Method of Education was created and refined by Dr. Maria Montessori, one of Italy’s first female medical doctors at the turn of the 20th Century.

The method is based on observation of young children by Montessori, who came to understand the child’s naturally absorbent mind. It is this unique capacity to absorb information which allows children to naturally incorporate experiences in the environment directly into their whole basic character and personality for life.

 

National Assessment Program - Literacy & Numeracy

Year 3 and 5 students at Casa Mia participate in the NAPLAN assessment each year, as one measure of their progress in learning. In a Montessori classroom, student assessment is a dynamic and individualised process that prioritizes understanding each child's unique learning journey rather than solely focusing on traditional tests and grades. Teachers in Montessori environments use observation as a primary tool, carefully noting each student’s progress, interests, and challenges as they engage with hands-on materials and activities. This ongoing assessment allows educators to tailor instruction to each child’s developmental stage and needs, fostering a deeper, self-directed learning experience. Additionally, Montessori assessment emphasises self-evaluation and reflection, encouraging students to take an active role in their learning process and to set personal goals. This holistic approach ensures that assessment is not just a measure of what students know but also a guide for their growth and motivation in a supportive, nurturing environment.

 

Protective Behaviours

At Casa Mia, we actively encourage the children to know who they are; what makes them happy and what makes them sad and when they are sad – what they can do about it and who they can go to for support.

We do not refer to school rules but rather to the rights and responsibilities of all members of the community.
